Celestial Wedding of Aandal & Mahavishnu
19 & 20 October 2013
A two day ‘celestial marriage’ between Aandal, an incarnation of Goddess Mahalakshmi and
Mahavishnu, (also called Sri Rangamannaar) was held for the first time in Mumbai at
Shanmukhananda Auditorium. Last year, the Sabha had hosted the holy wedding of Tirupati
Balaji’s Srinivasa Kalyanam.

The chief of the Srivilliputtur Temple in Tamil Nadu, Satakopa Ramanuja Jeeyar performed the
wedding on both days, starting with the rendering of Vishnu Sahasranamam and engagement
ceremony, on the evening of the first day, followed by exchanging of garlands, kanya dhanam,
raksha bandhanam, mangalya dharanam, tying of mangalsutra and sapthapathi on the second
day. All rituals were performed according to Hindu traditions, amidst chanting of Vedic
recitations, the nadaswaram and beating of drums. Ladies wore Kancheepuram silk saris in
the nine-yards tradition and fragrant flowers, singing songs in praise of Goddess Aandal and
Mahavishnu.

Aandal, which literally means the girl who ruled over the Lord, was an ardent devotee of
Mahavishnu. She was born in a sage’s family and wanted to marry only the Lord. Every day,
she would make garlands for Him, which she would try on herself, before offering to the Lord.
Even today, the garlands placed on her idol in Srivilliputtur are sent to Tirupati, for Sri Balaji’s
idol. The Srivilliputtur Temple is dedicated to her and marks her birthplace.

The Sabha had also organized a dance-drama, Andal Vaibhavam by the artistes of
Rukminidevi Naatya Kshetram, Chennai, on the first day.
